Preface to Chapter 6 (Scary Stories) | Chapter 7 (Nightmare) to Chapter 12 (Balancing) | Chapter 13 (Confessions) to Chapter 18 (The Hunt) | Chapter 19 (Goodbyes) to Epilogue

7. Nightmare

'Nothing had changed in this forest for thousands of years, and all the myths and legends of a hundred different lands seemed much more likely in this green haze than they had in my clear-cut bedroom.' - Bella (narrating)

'There was one thing I was sure of, if I was sure of anything. The dark Edward in my dream last night was a reflection only of my fear of the word Jacob had spoken, and not Edward himself. Even so, when I'd screamed out in terror at the werewolf's lunge, it wasn't fear for the wolf that brought the cry of "no" to my lips. It was fear that he would be harmed — even as he called to me with sharp-edged fangs, I feared for him.' - Bella (narrating)

"[...]What are you writing yours on?"
"Whether Shakespeare's treatment of the female characters is misogynistic."
He stared at me like I'd just spoken in pig Latin. - Mike and Bella

"I think… and if you ever repeat what I'm saying right now I will cheerfully beat you to death, but I think that would hurt Jessica's feelings." - Bella (to Mike)

'My favorites [stories] were Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility. I'd read the first most recently, so I started into Sense and Sensibility, only to remember after I began three that the hero of the story happened to be named Edward. Angrily, I turned to Mansfield Park, but the hero of that piece was named Edmund, and that was just too close. Weren't there any other names available in the late eighteenth century?' - Bella (narrating)

8. Port Angeles

Jessica: "Tyler told everyone he's taking you to prom,"
Bella: "He said what?"
Angela (to Jessica): "I told you it wasn't true,"

'The windows were full of crystals, dream-catchers, and books about spiritual healing. I didn't even go inside. Through the glass I could see a fifty-year-old woman with long, gray hair worn straight down her back, clad in a dress right out of the sixties, smiling welcomingly from behind the counter. I decided that was one conversation I could skip. There had to be a normal bookstore in town.' - Bella (narrating)

'Stupid, unreliable vampire' - Bella (narrating)

'It was amazing how instantaneously the choking fear vanished, amazing how suddenly the feeling of security washed over me — even before I was off the street — as soon as I heard his voice.' - Bella (narrating)

Bella: "Um. "I'm going to run over Tyler Crowley tomorrow before school?"
Edward: "Why?"
Bella: "He's telling everyone that he's taking me to prom — either he's insane or he's still trying to make up for almost killing me last… well, you remember it, and he thinks prom is somehow the correct way to do this. So I figure if I endanger his life, then we're even, and he can't keep trying to make amends. I don't need enemies and maybe Lauren would back off if he left me alone. I might have to total his Sentra, though. If he doesn't have a ride he can't take anyone to prom…"
Edward: "I heard about that."
Bella: "You did? If he's paralyzed from the neck down, he can't go to the prom, either"

Bella: "You really shouldn't do that to people, It's hardly fair."
Edward: "Do what?"
Bella: "Dazzle them like that — she's probably hyperventilating in the kitchen right now."

Edward: "I dazzle people?"
Bella: "You haven't noticed? Do you think everybody gets their way so easily?"
Edward: "Do I dazzle you?"

Bella: "Okay, then. Let's say, hypothetically of course, that… someone… could know what people are thinking, read minds, you know — with a few exceptions."
Edward: "Just one exception, hypothetically."
Bella: "All right, with one exception, then. How does that work? What are the limitations? How would… that someone… find someone else at exactly the right time? How would he know she was in trouble?"
Edward: "Hypothetically?"
Bella: "Sure."
Edward: "Well, if… that someone…"
Bella: "Let's call him 'Joe,'"
Edward: "Joe, then. If Joe had been paying attention, the timing wouldn't have needed to be quite so exact. Only you could get into trouble in a town this small. You would have devastated their crime rate statistics for a decade, you know."
Bella: "We were speaking of a hypothetical case,"

'He opened the passenger door, holding it for me as I stepped in, shutting it softly behind me. I watched him walk around the front of the car, amazed, yet again, by how graceful he was. I probably should have been used to that by now — but I wasn't. I had a feeling Edward wasn't the kind of person anyone got used to.' - Bella (narrating)

9. Theory

"Most of the time I tune it all out — it can be very distracting. And then it's easier to seem normal when I'm not accidentally answering someone's thoughts rather than their words." - Edward

Bella: "My mind doesn't work right? I'm a freak?"
Edward: "I hear voices in my mind and you're worried that you're the freak"

Edward: "I hate driving slow,"
Bella: "This is slow?"
Edward: "Enough commentary on my driving, I'm still waiting for your latest theory."

Bella: "[...]He told me one…"
Edward: "Go on,"
Bella: "About vampires."
Edward (calmly): "And you immediately thought of me?"

(About Edward being a vampire. To Edward) '"I decided it didn't matter," I whispered.
"It didn't matter?" His tone made me look up — I had finally broken through his carefully composed mask. His face was incredulous, with just a hint of the anger I'd feared.
"No," I said softly. "It doesn't matter to me what you are." - Bella

Bella: "How old are you?"
Edward: "Seventeen,"
Bella: "And how long have you been seventeen?"
Edward: "A while,"

Bella: "Don't laugh — but how can you come out during the daytime?"
Edward (laughs): "Myth."
Bella: "Burned by the sun?"
Edward: "Myth."
Bella: "Sleeping in coffins?"
Edward: "Myth. I can't sleep"

"You aren't concerned about my diet?" - Edward

'His breath blew in my face, stunning me. It was the same exquisite scent that clung to his jacket, but in a more concentrated form. I blinked, thoroughly dazed. He leaned away.I was unable to move until my brain had somewhat unscrambled itself. Then I stepped out of the car awkwardly, having to use the frame for support. I thought I heard him chuckle, but the sound was too quiet for me to be certain.' - Bella (narrating)

10. Interrogations

Bella: "Do my questions bother you?"
Edward: "Not as much as your reactions do."

"Hadn't you noticed? I'm breaking all the rules now." - Edward

"W-o-w." [Jessica] exaggerated the word into three syllables. "Edward Cullen."
"I know," I agreed. "Wow" didn't even cover it. - Jessica and Bella

(About Edward) "I do have some trouble with incoherency when I'm around him," - Bella

Bella: "I'm curious, what would you do if someone dared you to eat food?"
Edward: "You're always curious."

Edward: "Are you going to answer the question?"
Bella: "Yes."
Edward: "Yes, you are going to answer, or yes, you really think that?"

"Of course, keeping you safe is beginning to feel like a full-time occupation that requires my constant presence." - Edward

"Of all the things about me that could frighten you, you worry about my driving." - Edward

11. Complications

"He looks at you like… like you're something to eat," - Mike

Bella: "I couldn't sleep,"
Edward: "Neither could I,"

'He'd been flinging questions at me with such speed that I felt like I was taking one of those psychiatric tests where you answer with the first word that comes to mind.' - Bella (narrating)

"I like the night. Without the dark, we'd never see the stars. Not that you see them here much." - Bella

12. Balancing

Charlie: "I'm going to pretend I didn't see you behind the wheel, Jake,"
Jacob: "We get permits early on the rez,"
Charlie: "Sure you do,"

Bella: "My badminton team won all four games."
Charlie: "Wow, I didn't know you could play badminton."
Bella: "Well, actually I can't, but my partner is really good,"

"I have a better than average grasp of human nature. People are predictable. But you… you never do what I expect. You always take me by surprise." - Edward

Bella (about hunting): "Should I say 'have fun,' or is that the wrong sentiment?"
Edward: "No, 'have fun' works as well as anything."

'"We match." [Edward] laughed again. I realized he had a long, light tan sweater on, with a white collar showing underneath, and blue jeans. I laughed with him, hiding a secret twinge of regret — why did he have to look like a runway model when I couldn't?' - Edward and Bella (narrating)

'Five miles. I didn't answer, so that he wouldn't hear my voice crack in panic. Five miles of treacherous roots and loose stones, trying to twist my ankles or otherwise incapacitate me. This was going to be humiliating.' - Bella (narrating)

Edward: "Do you see the brightness ahead?"
Bella: "Um, should I?"
Edward (smirking): "Maybe it's a bit soon for your eyes."
Bella: "Time to visit the optometrist,"
