13. Confessions
Edward: "Tell me what you're thinking, it's still so strange for me, not knowing."
Bella: "You know, the rest of us feel that way all the time."
"I'm the world's best predator, aren't I? Everything about me invites you in — my voice, my face, even my smell. As if I need any of that!" - Edward
"That is something to be afraid of, indeed. Wanting to be with me. That's really not in your best interest." - Edward
Edward: "Maybe that's not the right comparison. Maybe it would be too easy to turn down the brandy. Perhaps I should have made our alcoholic a heroin addict instead."
Bella: "So what you're saying is, I'm your brand of heroin?"
Edward: "Yes, you are exactly my brand of heroin."
"By the next morning I was in Alaska." He sounded ashamed, as if admitting a great cowardice. "I spent two days there, with some old acquaintances… but I was homesick. I hated knowing I'd upset Esme, and the rest of them, my adopted family. In the pure air of the mountains it was hard to believe you were so irresistible. I convinced myself it was weak to run away. I'd dealt with temptation before, not of this magnitude, not even close, but I was strong. Who were you, an insignificant little girl" — he grinned suddenly — "to chase me from the place I wanted to be? So I came back…" - Edward
Bella: "You already know how I feel, of course, I'm here… which, roughly translated, means I would rather die than stay away from you." [She frowns] "I'm an idiot."
Edward: "You are an idiot,"
Edward: "And so the lion fell in love with the lamb…"
Bella: "What a stupid lamb,"
Edward: "What a sick, masochistic lion."
Edward: "I don't think I can. I've told you, on the one hand, the hunger — the thirst — that, deplorable creature that I am, I feel for you. And I think you can understand that, to an extent. Though as you are not addicted to any illegal substances, you probably can't empathize completely. But… there are other hungers. Hungers I don't even understand, that are foreign to me."
Bella: "I may understand that better than you think."
Edward: "Silly Bella, running is second nature to me, it's not something I have to think about."
Bella: "Show-off,"
'And then [Edward's]s cold, marble lips pressed very softly against mine.
What neither of us was prepared for was my response.
Blood boiled under my skin, burned in my lips. My breath came in a wild gasp. My fingers knotted in his hair, clutching him to me. My lips parted as I breathed in his heady scent.
Immediately I felt him turn to unresponsive stone beneath my lips. His hands gently, but with irresistible force, pushed my face back. I opened my eyes and saw his guarded expression.
"Oops," I breathed.
"That's an understatement."' - Bella (narrating) and Edward
Edward (grinning playfully): "You're intoxicated by my very presence."
Bella: "I can't argue with that," [She gives him the keys to her truck] "Take it easy — my truck is a senior citizen."
14. Mind over Matter
"Music in the fifties was good. Much better than the sixties, or the seventies, ugh!" He shuddered. "The eighties were bearable." - Edward
"Do you think I could walk down the street in the sunlight without causing traffic accidents? There's a reason why we chose the Olympic Peninsula, one of the most sunless places in the world. It's nice to be able to go outside in the day. You wouldn't believe how tired you can get of nighttime in eighty-odd years." - Edward
'I heard the door close quietly, and almost simultaneously he was outside my door, opening it for me.
"Very human," I complimented him.
"It's definitely resurfacing."' . Bella and Edward
"Can I have a minute to be human?" I asked.
"Certainly." He gestured with one hand that I should proceed.
"Stay," I said, trying to look severe.
"Yes, ma'am." And he made a show of becoming a statue on the edge of my bed. - Bella and Edward
Edward: "Did I do something wrong?"
Bella: "No — the opposite. You're driving me crazy,"
Edward (pleased and triumphant): "Really?"
Bella:"Would you like a round of applause?"
"Bring on the shackles — I'm your prisoner." - Edward (smiling)
"Should I sing you to sleep?" - Edward
Edward: "You have a very floral smell, like lavender… or freesia. It's mouthwatering."
Bella: "Yeah, it's an off day when I don't get somebody telling me how edible I smell."
15. The Cullens
"Your hair looks like a haystack… but I like it." - Edward
Edward: "[...] why anyone would bet against Alice, I can't imagine. At any rate, we don't have secrets in the family. It's not really feasible, what with my mind reading and Alice seeing the future and all that."
Bella: "And Jasper making you feel all warm and fuzzy about spilling your guts, don't forget that."
Edward: "Are you going to tell Charlie I'm your boyfriend or not?"
Bella: "Is that what you are?"
Edward: "It's a loose interpretation of the word 'boy,' I'll admit."
'I doubted there were any etiquette books detailing how to dress when your vampire sweetheart takes you home to meet his vampire family.' - Bella (narrating)
Bella: "Edward can do everything, right?"
[Jasper snickered and Esme gave Edward a reproving look.]
Esme: "I hope you haven't been showing off— it's rude,"
"I'm feeling extremely insignificant." - Bella
16. Carlisle
'It was a strange combination to absorb — the everyday concerns of the town doctor stuck in the middle of a discussion of his early days in seventeenth-century London.' - Bella (narrating)
Bella: "He swam to France?"
Edward: "People swim the Channel all the time, Bella,"
Bella: "That's true, I guess. It just sounded funny in that context. Go on."
Edward: "I keep waiting for it to happen."
Bella: "For what to happen?"
Edward: "I know that at some point, something I tell you or something you see is going to be too much. And then you'll run away from me, screaming as you go."
"I was prepared to feel… relieved. Having you know about everything, not needing to keep secrets from you. But I didn't expect to feel more than that. I like it. It makes me… happy." - Edward
Alica: "It sounded like you were having Bella for lunch, and we came to see if you would share,"
Edward: "Sorry, I don't believe I have enough to spare," he replied, his arms holding me recklessly close.
17. The Game
Billy: "You seem… well informed about the Cullens. More informed than I expected."
Bella: I stared him down. "Maybe even better informed than you are."
'"Well, I sort of have a date with Edward Cullen tonight, and he wanted to introduce me to his parents… Dad?"
It appeared that Charlie was having an aneurysm.' - Bella
Edward: "You smell so good in the rain,"
Bella: "In a good way, or in a bad way?"
Edward: "Both, always both."
Bella (about playing baseball): "Do they like to cheat, then?"
Esme: "Oh yes — you should hear the arguments they get into! Actually, I hope you don't, you would think they were raised by a pack of wolves."
18. The Hunt
"You brought a snack?" - Laurent
(About James) "Listen to me, Alice. I saw his mind. Tracking is his passion, his obsession — and he wants her, Alice — her, specifically. He begins the hunt tonight." - Edward
Bella: "[...] you'll make it look like that's a ruse, obviously. He'll know that we'll know that he's listening. He'll never believe I'm actually going where I say I am going."
Emmett: "She's diabolical,"
'And graceful little Alice pulled back her lips in a horrific grimace and let loose with a guttural snarl that had me cowering against the seat in terror.
Edward smiled at her. "But keep your opinions to yourself," he muttered suddenly.' - Bella (narrating) and Edward
